Trees Uniting Neighbors

The residents of Pomona Avenue in Newark were tired of seeing the long, empty, grass medians on their street filled with litter and causing an eyesore. Ready to take action, they reactivated the Pomona Avenue Block Association and adopted the grass medians from the City of Newark. Their first project was to plant trees there!

The residents patiently waited as their tree planting project was postponed due to Covid, like so many other things in 2020. But on October 17th the residents’ dream of creating a new tree canopy was realized by working with the NJ Tree Foundation and volunteers to plant 16 trees along their street!

The Pomona Avenue Block Association volunteers are so grateful for the new trees and truly understand their importance! The street has several mature trees but many will need to be removed in the coming years as they are reaching the end of their life cycle. The newly planted oaks, maples, and crepe myrtles will have plenty of room to grow and will help supplement the existing tree canopy. The Pomona Avenue residents are thrilled about their new trees. They created a watering schedule so each neighbor takes care of the trees and installed solar-powered lights to brighten the median at night!
