Tonight Camden City Council approved a 5-year Community Forestry Management Plan (CFMP) to promote a healthy urban forest! Vibrant trees beautify Camden streets, improve air quality, provide shade, and increase property values. With an approved CFMP, Camden will receive liability protection from the state and up to $25,000 in funding every year to support CFMP goals, including:

– public hazardous tree identification

– public tree maintenance and removal

– skills training to city workers

– and tree planting.

Camden’s plan will soon be submitted to the state of NJ for approval. Thanks so much to NJ Community Forestry for their support of Camden thus far!

Urban Airshed Reforestation Program (UARP)

The NJ Tree Foundation joined forces with nearly 100 Camden residents and volunteers today to bring 50+ trees, shrubs, and perennials to the Whitman Park neighborhood of Camden! Trees were planted along the 1600 block of Louis, the 1200 block of Jackson, and the 1100&1200 blocks of Sheridan Street. Pictured above: trees and shrubs now surround the Jackson St. community garden! This planting was possible thanks to funding from Impact100 Philadelphia.

Today is the first day of the tree planting season for our new tree planting crew. The crew is comprised of ex-cons who, over the next eight weeks, will learn how to properly plant, mulch and maintain trees. They will also get training in rain garden planting and general landscaping. Once the season is over, these men will have gained valuable job skills and made a very nice sum of money!

The NJ Tree Foundation is branching out in Camden! Recently, a litter-infested vacant lot in Camden, NJ was cleaned and greened by local residents.

With funding from Impact100 and the William Penn Foundation, we are planting trees to green streets, and shrubs and perennials to create safe havens for Camden residents.

In May, 2001 these trees were planted at the Long Branch Habitat for Humanity office. They were 2-2 1/2″ caliper, about 12′ tall. This picture was taken in 2008, just 7 years later.
