It is so easy to find tree crimes on any given day in New Jersey. Here are just a few that we have come across over the years. It is unfortunate that we have so many landscapers that do not take the time to learn the proper way to plant, mulch and maintain our community forest. We hope that will continue to change with NJ’s licensing bill that requires tree care companies to have a Licensed Tree Expert on staff, follow ANSI guidelines, and continue to learn the proper techniques for tree care.

Maples are an extremely common tree throughout New Jersey, on streets and in parks and forests. There are seven different species of maples native to the state, so you have plenty of options if you are looking to add a native maple tree to your yard. When selecting a maple, however, be careful! There’s one species that’s not only non-native, but is invasive! Norway Maples are hardy and have been frequently planted as street trees throughout the state, but they have a tendency to spread easily and crowd out other plants. At some point, you have probably noticed trees with roots wrapping around the base of the tree. These are called girdling roots, and they can be incredibly harmful to the tree! They are mostly seen in hand-planted trees, as opposed to ones naturally growing in forests, and are more common in urban environments where space is limited, though they can occur anywhere.

Our annual TreeKeepers workshop is coming to Camden on June 9th!

It’s that time of year again! NJ Tree Foundation Urban Airshed Reforestation Program will host its annual tree care workshop, TreeKeepers, on June 9th, 2018. TreeKeepers is a fun way for residents and recent tree recipients to get a more in-depth lesson on how to care for their trees, and provides free tools that are helpful for tree care. Read more
