Eastern Tent Caterpillar

What is this?
Eastern Tent Caterpillar larvae spin silken webs in tree branch forks.

How do I fix it?
Use a stick to remove the nest – best done in early morning while caterpillars are present. Caterpillars overwinter in small black egg masses that encircle the branch, and can be removed with a fingernail. Dispose of in sealed plastic bag – do not compost!

Can it be prevented in the future?
Unfortunately Eastern Tent Caterpillar infestations cannot be prevented. Keep an eye out for egg masses and nests, and remove as soon as they are spotted.
