JOB OPENING: PROGRAM ASSISTANT 

The NJ Tree Foundation is seeking 2-3 Program Assistants for its Urban Airshed Reforestation Program. 

The Program Assistant will work directly with the NJ Tree Foundation’s Program Director to implement community-based tree planting projects in Camden and Gloucester City during the spring of 2023 (late March-early May, schedule pending). Most plantings will be held on Saturdays, with the possibility of at least one weekday planting. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities 

The Program Assistant will be responsible for meeting the Program Director at the planting site. Work locations will vary throughout Camden and Gloucester City. A schedule with planting dates and locations will be provided to the Program Assistant in advance. The primary duties of the Program Assistant is to meet the Program Director at the planting site at 8AM or earlier to assist with the planting demonstration,  supervising volunteers, and moving trees as needed. The Program Assistant must have their own transportation. Examples of duties in the field include: 

Offloading 12-15’ trees (Up to 600 lbs)* (most trees will be set up in advance, but trees may need to be moved on a case by case basis)

Digging holes 

Planting trees 

Laying mulch 

Coordinating volunteers 

Recording volunteers during event sign in

Unloading and loading tools in the work truck

Required Skills and Experience 

The NJ Tree Foundation is seeking hard working and reliable individuals (2-3) that enjoy working outside, coordinating community projects, and a willingness to engage with volunteers. The applicant must work well with diverse populations, have an interest in tree planting, landscaping, and/or environmental work, and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in all they do. Previous tree planting experience is helpful but not required. The ability to speak Spanish is a plus, but not required. Preference will be given to Camden or Gloucester City residents.

Pay and Hours 

The job is part-time at 3-4/hours per planting day, including travel time to the planting site, and will pay $17/hour. The job will start the last weekend in March and finish at the start of May. Potential total hours for the Spring 2023 season is approximately 25-28 hours.
