Screen Shot 2013-07-03 at 3.23.39 PM Join the NJ Tree Foundation in June for our Newark TreeKeepers Workshops! A series of four sessions, these classroom and hands-on trainings will teach you how to maintain and enhance the health of your community’s trees.

All workshops will be held at the Ironbound Community Corporation Office:
29 Cortland St, Newark, NJ.

SPACE IS LIMITED, so please sign up today. Newark residents attend at no charge. Non-Newark residents pay $20/session. All attendees receive free tools, educational materials, and dinner at each workshop. 1 CEU is earned per session, which can be applied toward your state approved Community Forestry Management Plan requirements.

NJ Recovery Fund – Environmental Projects

Who has a shovel-ready project and would like to partner with us? We are submitting a Letter of Intent to the NJ Community Foundation/Dodge Foundation – NJ Recovery Fund. It is DUE 2/25/2013. Guidelines are:

Priority #4: Environmental Protection and Restoration Projects
The protection and restoration of natural systems and environmental infrastructure is essential to the long-term health, prosperity and resiliency of New Jersey and its communities.

A portion of the New Jersey Recovery Fund will be directed to projects that showcase and demonstrate environmental protection and restoration as a resiliency strategy, including:
• Green infrastructure solutions to storm water management and neighborhood flooding;
• Restoration of critical wildlife habitat, stream banks, wetlands, riparian corridors, and natural areas;
• Improvements to public access to open space;
• Research, modeling and data collection to prioritize and inform projects.
•
Overall preferences: Priority will be given to projects in the Delaware Bayshore, Raritan Bay, Meadowlands, coastal region, Pinelands, Barnegat Bay, and urban centers.

Reducing Invasives, Retaining Our Trees Workshop

This exciting Stewardship Workshop will be held at Duke Farms on February 20, 2013 from 12:30 – 4:00 pm.

The workshop covers best management practices of public trees and forests for control of invasive species (including deer) and for storm risks while preserving our important tree canopy.  The target audience is municipal and public works officials, foresters, arborists, engineers, planners, flood plain managers, landscape architects, environmental and shade tree commissions, and other interested people.   Continuing Education Units will be offered.

In 2012, the NJ Tree Foundation planted 1,457 large shade trees in Camden, Newark and other NJ cities. Our volunteers planted 12,650 tree saplings across the state to celebrate Arbor Day 2012! You can be a part of greening New Jersey by making an end-of-year donation to support our work. 
 
In 2013, requests for trees will be greater than ever before. After Hurricane Sandy, 113,000 trees were removed by our utility companies. It is estimated that 4 times that number of trees were damaged and/or removed from personal property and NJ parks and forests. 
 
 
Year-end donations are tax-deductible and can truly transform our Garden State. 
Thank you!
Give by December 31 and your donation will be deductible on your 2012 tax return.

New Re-entry Training Program

This summer, we are starting a Landscaping & Maintenance training program for men under parole supervision. Three men will provide community service to our 9/11 Memorial – The Grove of Remembrance (Liberty State Park, Jersey City) and our Urban Nursery, in exchange for earning a certificate and job placement assistance. Trainees will learn:

Tree, shrub, perennial and weed identification.
Proper tree & shrub pruning.
Proper mulching.
Transplanting shrubs & perennials.
General landscape & nursery maintenance.

We are very excited about this new program!

State of NJ’s 62nd Arbor Day Celebration

The NJ Tree Foundation and the NJ Community Forestry Program will celebrate Arbor Day 2012 in Haddon Township, NJ. We are planting 150 large shade trees to beautify the streets of Haddon Township! Please join us!

Time: 8:00 am until all the trees are planted

Place: Meet at West Crystal Lake Avenue and West Park Avenue, Haddon Township, NJ

The NJ Envirothon

This year’s NJ Envirothon – A Natural Resources Problem Solving Competition for High School Students – will be held at:

Camp Sacajawea in Farmingdale 242 Adelphia Road Farmingdale, Monmouth County, New Jersey on Saturday May 5, 2012. The environmental issue is “Nonpoint Source Pollution/Low Impact Development”

The New Jersey Envirothon competition is a one-day event that takes place near the end of the school year. Teams are tested on environmental topics through hands-on interactive problem-solving at five testing stations. Test questions may cover any information in the study guide and suggested resource materials or web links. The contest consists of hands-on questions along with some true/false, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks. Students have 30 minutes at each station. Team presentations last 10 minutes. The team that best demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of natural resources, as well as teamwork and communication skills, moves on to represent New Jersey in the Canon Envirothon competition which is North America’s Largest High School Environmental Education Competition. This multi-day event further tests the team’s understanding of the environment and involves teams from all regions of the United Statesand Canada.
