Fostering Community Change

We are so thankful to everyone who has made an end-of-year donation to the NJ Tree FoundationYour generosity, along with the Jersey Giveback Guide (a project of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation)has helped us raise much-needed funding to positively impact lives, communities, and the environment through tree planting. Royden Street in Camden is a perfect example of this.
The NJ Tree Foundation partnered with the residents of Royden Street to plant trees in 2004. But trees were only the beginning of a decade of change for this street that, like much of Camden, was plagued with crime and violence. The trees made Royden Street look pretty – and the residents liked that. So they started picking up trash. They planted flowers in their tree pits and
pino trees made window boxes, too. They hung colorful flags. They decorated their trees with lights that turn on every night– as you can see in the photo – and bought benches so they can enjoy their beautiful street. The residents of Royden Street even started their very own Block Supporter Program and have their own community information board. As the residents cared for and enjoyed their street the criminals went elsewhere.

Today, when you walk down this block on Royden Street you feel a sense of community pride. You feel welcomed. You do not feel like you are in the middle of one of the most dangerous cities in the country. Royden Street is a nice place to live – with friendly neighbors who care about each other. The block completely changed, and it all started with a few flowering trees planted by neighbors.

There is still time to make an online tax-deductible donation or mail a check to the NJ Tree Foundation. Please give in 2014 to help us foster more long-term success stories in 2015.

Exciting News and Tree Transformations

You may have heard that we are part of the Jersey Giveback Guide, a project of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to help great New Jersey nonprofits fundraise during the holiday season. The Dodge Foundation challenged us to get 50 people to donate to the NJ Tree Foundation. With extreme gratitude, we are excited to announce that we met our 50 donor goal and will receive a $1,000 match grant from the Dodge Foundation! THANK YOU to those who have already donated – you made this possible!

Now we are challenging you to keep the generosity going! If you have not already, please join the group of more than 50 people who have donated to the NJ Tree Foundation. Your donation helps our tree recipients, like the People’s Garden and the Pedal Farm. These community gardens rallied their neighborhood to plant 46 trees in Newark last spring.

“Since the tree planting, life has been added back into our neighborhood,” explained Tobias Fox, Founder of the People’s Garden. The Washington Street planting was truly a community effort as residents planting demoand local organizations including two schools, a church, a park, and the community gardens all collaborated to plant and adopt trees. Everyone was involved – kids, youth, adults, and even a family dog participated on the planting day!

The variety of trees planted have transformed the neighborhood by adding shade and beauty while improving the environment. Some will bear fruit in the fall, too! Collectively, the trees and new tree pits will intercept more than 18,000 gallons of stormwater annually. This neighborhood was renewed because of these trees. You can help us continue this work in 2015 by making a tax-deductible donation. We hope you will partner with us to improve New Jersey by planting trees!
